In public buildings microbes and bacteria can linger on high touch surfaces including door handles, panic bars, and other doors hardware. Lock companies have developed antimicrobial finishes for door locks to keep the amount of microbes and bacteria on those surfaces from growing.

To create the antimicrobial coating, a special IFS Silver Additive is included in the finish of the door hardware. This coating inhibits the enzyme activity and multiplication of microbes and bacteria. If microbes and bacteria can't multiply, they don't spread over a surface or linger there.

With the presence of moisture, the additive releases silver ions which have an ability to strongly bind to the cellular enzymes of microbes and inhibit enzyme activity of cell walls, membranes, and nucleic acids. Since microbes are negatively charged and the silver ions are positively charged, the ions are attracted to the microbes and disturb their electric balance.
